Although Tanzania remains one of the poorest countries in the world, its economy is strongly expanding. Donor assistance and solid macroeconomic policies supported real GDP growth of nearly 6% in 2006. Tourism is growing in importance and ranks as the second highest foreign exchange earner after agriculture. Mineral production (gold, diamonds, tanzanite) has also grown significantly in the last decade.
