Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) announced timely execution of the planned migration from Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania.
The IPv6 will offer unlimited internet addresses unlike the one being currently used and will ensure the country avoids digital blackout.
Tanzania currently has 11.6 million internet users absorbed by IPv4; however the country aims to increase the internet users to 15 million by 2016 for which the implementation of IPv6 is under process.
According to the Director of Information and Communication Technologies at TCRA, Dr. Joseph Kilongola, the deadline to migrate to the new version by 2020 will be met surely.
“It is necessary to educate the users about the adoption of the new version so as to exhaust the new version effectively unlike IPv4” said Dr. Kilongola.
TCRA realized and planned the move from IPv4 to IPv6 in 2013.
TCRA Director General Prof John Nkoma inaugurated the Tanzania Network Operators Group (TZNOG) training to provide support and know how to local internet engineers in Tanzania in 2013.
