On 25th April 2018, Msufini Tanzania Limited (MTL) has officially started the construction of a chemical plant in Mlandzi, about 54 kilometers north-west of Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
When commissioned in March 2020, the plant will turn 2,500 tonnes of un-iodized salt (Sodium chloride), into chlorine and lye (Sodium hydroxide), on a monthly basis.
These chemicals are used in the disinfection of water, for human consumption, animal consumption and in swimming pools.
It will be the first plant of this kind in Tanzania and of one of the largest in Africa.
During the foundation ceremony, Tanzania’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments Charles Mwijage commented that the project will greatly reduce the cost of importing the chemicals.
MTL is a 75%-25% joint venture between Junaco Tanzania Limited, a wholly Tanzanian private company (Junaco), and Serba Dinamik Holdings Berhad (Serba Dinamik), a Malaysian oil and gas services company.
