Upgrades to the parking apron and taxiway of the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on the island of Unguja, which is part of the Tanzanian Archipelago of Zanzibar, have been completed and officially launched during a brief inaugural ceremony with the President of Zanzibar, Ali Mohamed Shein.
The ceremony marked the official opening of the expanded parking apron and the extended and resurfaced taxiway that were both a part of the ongoing refurbishment and modernization of the main airport on the island of Unguja, which has seen a significant rise in direct flights over the past several years.
According to President Shein, the airport is on track to expand, which will allow larger aircraft to land and bring in additional visitors, including tourists.
The cost of the expansion project has been reported at nearly TZS 81.5 billion, with the ongoing work on the airport’s Terminal 2 expected to be completed by October 2015.
