According to Mrs Asteria Mlambo, Acting Chief Executive of Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit Buses (DART) agency, a number of buses will start operating by the end of 2014, ahead of the expected delivery of the project in 2015.
“The project is expected to be completed next year, but efforts are underway to make sure that few buses start to operate this year,” she announced.
DART agency operates under the Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government through the Ministerial Advisory Board to establish and operate Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Dar es Salaam City.
The need to introduce BRT system in Dar es Salaam came after a realization of a steady multiplication of the city populace and the inclination of people to own and drive private cars which have resulted into slow mobility of traffic.
To obviate heavy traffic jams, the Government of Tanzania came up with the idea of BRT which is cheaper to operate, comfortable and affordable to all users.
DART system is being implemented in six phases. According to Mrs Mlambo the system has already been implemented by more than 50%.
