Mobile operator Tigo Tanzania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for school internet connectivity, with the Ministry of Communications, Works and Infrastructure on July 14th 2016.
The e-School project aims to connect at least 700 public secondary schools to the internet.
Tigo’s contribution will include wiring classrooms and installation of wireless LAN with internet access points for a period of 2 years.
The Ministry will provide a list of schools without computer labs and guide the implementation process.
Shavkat Berdiev, Chief Commercial Officer of Tigo, explained that the company is implementing Tanzania’s 2025 vision of having a well learned and educated society by that year.
For this, the company is committed to providing internet access to most of the secondary schools in Tanzania.
So far, Tigo Tanzania has connected 31 secondary schools to the internet as part of its social investment projects. The telecom company plans to connect 50 more this year.
Tanzania has a total of 4,753 secondary schools as of 2015, of which 3,692 are public and 1,061 are private.

Internet services’ users in Tanzania reached 17.3m in 2015 (34% of total population), compared to only 5.3m in 2011.
The number of mobile wireless users increased significantly during 2011–2015, from 3.7m to 16.2m, accounting for more than 90% of the total number of internet users.
