Tanzania President Forms Commission to Assess and Advise on Tax Matters

Dodoma, Tanzania – July 29, 2024: During the 15th Meeting of the National Business Council (TNBC), the President of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, announced the formation of a Presidential Commission to assess and advise on tax matters.

The commission is mandated to evaluate the current tax system and provide actionable recommendations to the government.

This move aims to address the ongoing tax challenges and enhance the country’s tax system to foster a more conducive business environment.

The Presidential Commission on Tax Reforms will be chaired by Ambassador Ombeni Yohana Sefue, retired Chief Secretary. The members of the commission, selected for their vast experience and expertise, are as follows:

  • Prof. Florens Luoga: Former Governor of the Central Bank (BoT) and retired Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam.
  • Prof. Mussa Juma Assad: Former Controller and Auditor General (CAG) and retired Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam.
  • Mr. Leonard Mususa: Former Chief Executive Officer of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Tanzania.
  • CPA Aboubakar Mohamed Aboubakar: Senior Lecturer at Zanzibar University (ZU).
  • Ambassador Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar: Retired Ambassador and Legal Advisor.
  • Mr. David Tarimo: Tax Expert and Consultant, and former Head of Tax Advisory Department at PwC.
  • Ambassador Maimuna Kibenga Tarishi: Secretary-General and retired Ambassador.
  • Mr. Rished Bade: Commissioner of Foreign Finances at the Ministry of Finance and former Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

The formation of this commission comes in response to the complex tax challenges faced by foreign investors in Tanzania, which have recently been highlighted by a number of ambassadors in the country.
