Tanzania and Japan in Talks for Morocco Flyover Construction to Ease Urban Traffic in Dar es Salaam

Hon Bashungwa at the meeting for Dar es Salaam Morocco flyover construction

Tanzania is currently in discussions with Japan for the construction of the Morocco Flyover in Dar es Salaam and collaboration on projects to reduce traffic congestion and enhance economic activities in cities and urban areas in Tanzania.

This statement was made on 3rd October 2024 by Tanzania’s Minister of Works, Innocent Bashungwa during the opening of a partnership meeting between Tanzania and Japan to enhance the quality of infrastructure construction.

The meeting brought together experts in constructing high-quality and durable infrastructure capable of withstanding disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons, drawing on Japan’s experience.

Bashungwa stated: “We are currently engaged in discussions with Japan about the design and construction of the Morocco Flyover, as well as improving other road intersections to reduce the reliance on traffic lights.”

Bashungwa urged Tanzanians to cooperate with various investors coming to the country to invest, conduct business, and reduce bureaucracy in the implementation of development projects.

On his part, the Deputy Minister of Transport, David Kihenzile emphasized that the development of any country relies on the transportation sector, as it plays a crucial role in both domestic and international trade.

He added that Tanzania holds a significant role as a gateway for neighboring countries to facilitate transportation and access to international markets.

Tanzania and Japan Bilateral Relations

Tanzania and Japan have maintained bilateral relations since Tanganyika’s independence in 1961.

Through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan provides aid in agriculture, fisheries, and infrastructure development, aiming to boost economic growth and reduce poverty in Tanzania.

Key initiatives include supporting rice production, agricultural irrigation, and promoting the KAIZEN concept which is an approach to creating continuous improvement based on small ongoing positive changes for private sector growth.

Japan also invests in infrastructure, such as transportation, electricity, and energy, and enhances local government, water, and health services through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGHSP).
