The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has recently announced that it has set aside funds in the fiscal year (FY) 2015/2016 to invite Expression of Interests (EOIs) from eligible companies for Consultancy Services to undertake a Detailed Study and Engineering Design aiming at the development of Mwambani area’s new port in Tanga, Tanzania’s northern coastal region.
TPA’s will receive EOIs up to November 10th, 2015 date that has been extended from the initial one proposed on November 3rd.
The objective is to count with a detailed engineering study and designs containing analysis of all relevant aspects to develop the project including engineering surveys and detailed cost estimates, states TPA.
To ensure that all key aspects will be included in the report, TPA will issue the detailed terms of reference through a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the shortlisted companies.
The Mwambani port is part of a countrywide project – the Mwambani Port and Railway Corridor (Mwaporc) – that seeks to develop a hub port and deep sea port in Tanga, connected to a railway to directly link the Indian Ocean with East and Central African markets.
TPA’s aim is to reduce logistic costs for importers and exporters to support Tanzania’s economic growth and human development.
Mwaporc project estimated cost is over the USD 75 billions and includes the construction of the deep sea port and a heavy haul standard gauge railway to transport the crescent cargo’s traffic.
Shipping traffic coming from deep sea ships at Tanzania’s major ports has increased from 26.0 million gross register tonnage (GRT) in 2011/12 to 26.4 million GRT in 2012/13 according to TPA’s last statistics.
