Tanzania Cybersecurity Index 2024

Tanzania has been ranked Tier 1 for Africa in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, reflecting significant progress in its cybersecurity framework while also highlighting areas for further improvement.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recently released its Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024 report that measures the cybersecurity landscape across nations, with Tanzania’s performance drawing particular attention.

This fifth edition of the GCI evaluates countries based on their commitment to cybersecurity through five key pillars: Legal, Technical, Organizational, Capacity Development, and Cooperation.

Tanzania’s Ranking and Classification

  • Tier 1 in Africa: Tanzania has been classified as Tier 1 in the African region, indicating that it leads the continent in cybersecurity initiatives and frameworks. This ranking showcases Tanzania’s commitment to establishing robust cybersecurity measures and serves as a model for other nations in Africa.
  • Tier 3 Global Classification: Tanzania has been classified in Tier 3 of the GCI, indicating that while the country has made significant strides in establishing foundational cybersecurity measures, there remains considerable room for improvement compared to higher-tier nations. This tier classification reflects an ongoing commitment to enhancing cybersecurity frameworks but also highlights challenges that need addressing.

  • Legal Frameworks: Tanzania is among 177 countries that have enacted at least one regulation related to personal data protection or cybersecurity. This legal foundation is critical for fostering a secure digital environment and protecting citizens’ rights.
  • Technical Measures: The report indicates that 139 countries have established active Computer Incident Response Teams (CIRTs). While specific information about Tanzania’s CIRT activities is not detailed, its Tier 3 ranking suggests that efforts are underway to bolster technical capabilities.
  • Capacity Development Needs: The GCI emphasizes that many countries, including Tanzania, must focus on enhancing capacity development measures. This includes training programs and awareness campaigns aimed at improving cybersecurity skills among citizens and professionals.
