Vodacom Tanzania To Invest Over USD 100 Million Under Vision 2030 Strategy For Inclusive Digital Economy

Vodacom Tanzania, the country’s largest telecom operator and market leader in mobile money, has launched Vision 2030 with an over USD 100 million modernization program. The strategy focuses on expanding nationwide 4G and 5G, upgrading M-Pesa, introducing greener technologies, and supporting Tanzania’s digital transformation.

Vodacom Tanzania, the country’s largest telecommunications operator and leading provider of mobile financial services through M-Pesa, has launched its Vision 2030 strategy with plans to invest over USD 100 million in technology infrastructure modernization.

The company, which has operated in Tanzania since 1999 and is listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, serves tens of millions of customers and holds the largest share of the mobile subscriber market.

Vodacom plays a central role in the growth of Tanzania’s digital economy, particularly through mobile money and digital financial inclusion.

The Vision 2030 program, announced as Vodacom marks 25 years in Tanzania, is one of the largest investments in the company’s history.

It will focus on upgrading thousands of network sites across the country and enhancing IT infrastructure, including the M-Pesa platform. The initiative aims to improve data speeds, call quality, service stability, and cybersecurity.

Vodacom Tanzania Managing Director Philip Besiimire said: “With this investment, we are laying the groundwork for the next five years and beyond, empowering people through better access, protecting the planet through greener technologies, and maintaining the trust of our customers, partners, and investors. To date, over 1,000 network sites have already been upgraded across the lake zone, southern highlands, and parts of central Tanzania.”

The strategy is built around three pillars: people, planet, and trust. It aligns with Tanzania’s national digital transformation agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As part of its Net Zero 2035 ambition, Vodacom will deploy energy-efficient technologies that reduce power consumption by up to 30% while expanding coverage and performance.

Andrew Lupembe, Vodacom’s Network Director, noted: “This upgrade involves the latest technology and will significantly expand 4G coverage, ensuring faster internet speeds and improved connectivity wherever Vodacom is available. We are going greener with Huawei’s industry-leading ‘zero-bit-zero watt’ technology, which improves power efficiency and reduces carbon emissions while boosting performance for both 4G and 5G. Moreover, we are optimizing tower space by introducing multi-band radio technology which accommodates all spectrums in one radio as well as bringing on board multiple frequency bands in the same antennas.”

Tanzania Allocates USD 89M ICT Budget for 2026/27 Targeting Rural Towers, DRC Fibre Link, and 5G Expansion
