The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had granted Tanzanian government over USD 3.6 million, which amounts to around TZS 6 billion, under the commitment to develop agricultural sector and increase agricultural productivity by 2015.
According to Dr Servacius Likwelile, Permanent Secretary to the Tanzania Ministry of Finance, using the given funds on improving seeds, fertilizer procurement, and promotion of irrigation farming, Tanzania would be able to increase production of high value crops and average agricultural annual growth by at least 6 per cent.
The funding would be administered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperation.
Combined, the efforts of the government, the five years development plan, and the JICA agency would help Tanzania improve its economic standing and achieve agricultural development.
Japan and Tanzanian governments had partnership for a number of years, together trying to solve the problems arising in agricultural sector.
Previously in 2012, Japan had granted Tanzania 14.25 USD million dollars over the course of three years for agricultural development projects.
