India Ready to Invest in LNG in Tanzania

India has expressed interest in Tanzania’s LNG sector, as confirmed by Minister Hardeep Singh during India Energy Week 2025. The discussions with Tanzania’s Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, also covered biofuels, technical collaborations, and private sector participation in the country’s energy sector.

India has expressed its commitment to investing in Tanzania’s energy sector, particularly in liquefied natural gas (LNG), through private-sector partnerships.

This was revealed during discussions between Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, and India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh, held in New Delhi during India Energy Week 2025, which took place from February 6 to February 12, 2025.

Dr. Biteko emphasized that Tanzania is open to investment in various energy subsectors, including electricity and bulk procurement of petroleum products. He highlighted the country’s efforts to harness its energy resources to ensure a stable and sufficient power supply.

“Tanzania is committed to utilizing all available resources to meet its energy demands, including electricity, to support national development,” said Dr. Biteko. He noted that Tanzania requires approximately US$12 billion to achieve energy self-sufficiency, necessitating private sector participation. He invited Indian investors to explore opportunities in the country’s energy sector.

Minister Singh reaffirmed India’s strong trade relations with Tanzania and announced that Indian private companies are prepared to invest in Tanzania’s energy infrastructure.

“India is also ready to invest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biofuels and collaborate with Tanzania on technical issues related to the Energy Sector by building more capacity for Tanzanian experts and also having an expert exchange program between Tanzania and India,” says Hon. Singh.

He also confirmed that Indian companies will participate in Tanzania’s Fifth Licensing Round for oil and gas blocks, scheduled for March 2025.

Additionally, Minister Singh praised Tanzania’s progress in rural electrification and the implementation of clean cooking initiatives. He commended Dr. Biteko’s advocacy for Africa’s energy development and his stance on leveraging the continent’s abundant resources, including coal, to ensure reliable energy supply.
