Tanzania Annual Inflation Stabilize at 3% in February 2019

TANZANIA INFLATION FEBRUARY 2019

The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate for February 2019 has remained at 3.0% as it was recorded in January 2019.  

The overall index went up to 114.63 in February 2019 from 111.33 recorded in February 2018.

Food and Non-Food Inflation Rates
Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the month of February 2019 has decreased to 0.5% from 0.7% recorded in January 2019.

Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home for the month of February 2019 remains at 2.3% as it was recorded in January 2019.

Moreover, the 12-month index change for non-food products in February 2019 remains at 5.1% as it was recorded in January 2019.

Inflation Rate Excluding Food and Energy
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of February 2019 has stagnated at 3.1% as it was recorded in January 2019.

Monthly Headline Inflation Rate
The Consumer Price Index from January 2019 to February 2019 has increased by 1.1% compared to an increase of 0.5% recorded from December 2018 to January 2019.

The overall index has increased to 114.63 in February 2019 from 113.38 recorded in January 2019. The increase in the overall index is attributed to the price increase for both food and nonfood items.

Some food items that contributed to such an increase include; rice by 1.6%, maize grains by 1.3%, maize flour by 2.9%, fresh fish by 6.4%, dried sardines by 1.6%, fruits by 1.5%, vegetables by 1.7%, sweet potatoes by 2.7%, dry cassava by 2.2% and cooking banana by 3.4%.

On the other hand, Non-food items that contributed to such an increase include; charcoal by 3.1%, firewood by 7.1%, doctor’s consultation fee in private hospitals by 1.8%, food and drinks from restaurants by 1.2%, school bags by 1.4% and furniture by 7.7%.

Tanzania Inflation Holds at 3.2% in March 2026 as Food Prices Ease

Tanzania's annual headline inflation remained stable at 3.2% in March 2026, unchanged from February, as food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation eased to 5.5% from 5.7% the previous month. The monthly NCPI rose from 122.01 to 123.04, driven by price increases in fresh cassava, Irish potatoes, diesel, and charcoal, while core inflation edged up slightly to 2.2%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
