Tanzania Annual Inflation Decrease to 3.6% in May 2018

TANZANIA INFLATION MAY 2018

The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate for the month of May 2018 has decreased to 3.6% from 3.8% recorded in April 2018.

The overall index went up to 113.24 in May 2018 from 109.26 recorded in May 2017.

Food and Non-Food Inflation Rates
Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the month of May 2018 has decreased to 2.6% from 3.6% recorded in April 2018.

The 12-month index change for non-food products in May 2018 has increased to 4.5% from 3.9% recorded in April 2018.

Inflation Rate Excluding Food and Energy
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of May 2018 has slightly increased to 1.6% from 1.4% recorded in April 2018.

Monthly Headline Inflation Rate
The Consumer Price Index from April 2018 to May 2018 has changed by 0.03%, compared to a change of 0.4% recorded from March 2018 to April 2018.

The overall index has increased to 113.24 in May 2018 from 113.20 recorded in April 2018.

The increase of the overall index is attributed to the price increase for both food and non-food items.

Some food items that contributed to such an increase include; sardines by 7.9%, cooking oil by 0.7%, stone fruits by 6.3%, vegetables by 1.5% and cooking bananas by 2.3%.

On the other hand, non-food items that contributed to such an increase include; men’s suit by 1.8%, footwear for men and women by 0.3%, materials for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling by 7.6% and firewood by 11.3%
