The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate for April 2019 has increased to 3.2% from 3.1% recorded in March 2019.
The overall index went up to 116.82 in April 2019 from 113.20 recorded in April 2018.
Food and Non-Food Inflation Rates
Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the month of April 2019 has increased to 0.9% from 0.1% recorded in March 2019.
Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home for the month of April 2019 has increased to 2.7% from 2.0% recorded in March 2019.
On the other hand, the 12-month index change for non-food products in April 2019 has decreased to 5.3% from 5.7% recorded in March 2019.
Inflation Rate Excluding Food and Energy
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of April 2019 has slightly decreased to 3.6% from 3.7% recorded in March 2019.
Monthly Headline Inflation Rate
The Consumer Price Index from March 2019 to April 2019 has increased by 0.5% compared to an increase of 1.4% recorded from February 2019 to March 2019.
The overall index has increased to 116.82 in April 2019 from 116.23 recorded in March 2019.
The increase in the overall index is attributed to the price increase for both food and non-food items.
Some food items that contributed to such an increase include; rice by 1.1%, maize flour by 1.4%, sardines by 4.4%, fruits by 2.8%, peas by 4.2%, round potatoes by 1.5%, fresh cassava by 4.1% and sweet potatoes by 2.1%.
On the other hand, non-food items that contributed to such an increase include; diesel by 3.2%, second-hand garments for men by 1.1%, maintenance and repair of sewage systems by 2.6% and dental services by 1.8%.
