Lindi Jumbo, the graphite mining project located in Ruangwa, Lindi Region, has reached an annual production capacity of 40,000 tonnes of graphite, based on a confirmed reserve of 5.5 million tonnes, with production expected to last 24 years.

These details were provided by Paul Shauri, Public Relations Manager of Lindi Jumbo, during the mining and investment exhibition taking place in Ruangwa District, Lindi Region, on June 13, 2025.

The mine produces several grades of graphite, including Super Jumbo, Jumbo Large, and Jumbo Fine, with each grade sorted by the size of the graphite flakes extracted.

A total of 290 employees currently work at the Lindi Jumbo project. Of these employees, 43% are from villages surrounding the mine, 52% are from other regions of Tanzania, and 5% are from outside the country.

This breakdown highlights the project’s contribution to both local and national employment, as well as its international standards.

The main market for Lindi Jumbo’s graphite is currently India, with ongoing efforts by the company to process the graphite to meet the requirements of other markets such as China and Germany.

Graphite from the project is in high demand for a variety of uses, including the production of batteries for vehicles—especially for fuel-powered cars—brake linings, lubricants for high-temperature machinery, and crucibles used in steel manufacturing.

Additionally, the graphite is also utilized in the production of solar panels, due to its notable heat resistance.

Shauri explained that the company continues to invest in graphite processing to adapt to different international market needs, expanding the project’s global reach.

The Lindi Jumbo project

The Lindi Jumbo project is operated by Lindi Jumbo Ltd, a subsidiary of Walkabout Resources (ASX: WKT), and is recognized as one of the highest-grade graphite deposits in the world.

Located in southeastern Tanzania, the project began after successful feasibility studies and after receiving all necessary government approvals.

In May 2024, Walkabout Resources announced the successful production and shipment of the first consignment of on-specification graphite concentrate from the Lindi Jumbo mine.
