TATO Releases Safari Guide Code of Conduct and Ethics

TATO's Safari Guide Code of Conduct and Ethics

In August 2024, the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) announced the release of its new Safari Guide Code of Conduct and Ethics to raise the standards of safari guiding across Tanzania.

The document is a set of guidelines developed by the TATO to establish and promote high standards for safari guiding in Tanzania.

This new code aims to ensure that safari guides operate with professionalism and integrity while enhancing the overall experience for tourists.

It emphasizes professionalism and ethical behavior, ensuring that safari guides represent both their companies and Tanzania’s wilderness with the highest standards. Key aspects include professionalism and presentation, where guides are expected to maintain professionalism in their dress, language, and behavior, both on and off duty.

The section on conduct and ethics addresses compliance with national laws, respect for privacy, inclusiveness, and bans on illicit drug use and alcohol consumption while on duty. It also stresses the protection of clients’ privacy and data, which is crucial in maintaining trust and respect between guides and their clients.

The guidelines also focus on training and experience, encouraging guides to work within their areas of expertise and to pursue ongoing professional development. The code outlines emergency protocols and the need for guides to provide accurate and reliable information to their clients during safaris.

Vehicle safety is another key area addressed, with vehicle protocols ensuring that guides adhere to speed limits, maintain vehicle safety standards, and drive in a manner that respects both wildlife and client safety.

The code also emphasizes environmental impact, encouraging guides to practice responsible waste management, reduce the use of single-use plastics, and minimize their ecological footprint. Guides are encouraged to educate clients on sustainability and to promote behaviors that conserve Tanzania’s rich biodiversity.

In terms of wildlife interaction, the code promotes minimal interference with wildlife, urging guides to respect animal comfort zones and discourage disruptive behaviors that could harm the animals or alter their natural behaviors.

Lastly, cultural sensitivity is a vital component of the code, with guides expected to foster respectful interactions with local communities and enhance tourists’ cultural experiences by educating them on local customs and traditions.

TATO highlighted: “TATO urges all tour operators to adopt this code and ensure their guides adhere to these standards. By embracing these guidelines, we can significantly improve the image and quality of safari guiding in Tanzania.”
