The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has announced that the construction of the natural gas pipeline running between Mtwara to Dar es Salaam is nearing completion and will be commissioned in July 2015.
According to Kapuulya Musomba, General Manager of the Tanzania Gas Supply Company (GASCO), a subsidiary of the TPDC, construction of valve and gas receiving stations in Lindi and Kinyerezi are still underway along with a number of other connected projects, but the pipeline is on track to be completed later this year.
“We are on the right track,” he said, “We hope to complete everything by June this year.”
The pipeline project, which includes the construction of the 532 km gas pipeline and gas purification system, is expected to cost USD 1.2 billion and will reduce the cost of thermal energy production from USD 34 cents to USD 12 cents per megawatt.
