Tanzanians to Pay Car Petrol via Mobile Money Transfer

Tanzania’s mobile telecommunications company, Vodacom has partnered with petrol company Oilcom to offer customers the ability to fill up at the pump using its Mobile Money Transfer Service, M-Pesa.

The service will give customers at Oilcom stations the freedom to make cashless M-Pesa transactions, a practice which has been expanding nation-wide over the past few years.

M-Pesa’s mobile banking services allow customers to perform international and domestic person-to-person funds transfers, as well as to make payments for products and services such as electricity, insurance, school fees, and airline tickets.

Oilcom was established in 1990 and currently has more than 80 filling stations throughout Tanzania.

The partnership was lauded as a great step in advancing technology in the energy and mobile money sectors when the deal was announced last week.
