On 2 October 2026, the second day of the EU–Tanzania roadshow in Italy, Tanzanian groups visited agribusiness, artificial intelligence (AI), data infrastructure and railway facilities across Emilia-Romagna.
The agribusiness programme included Apofruit–Almaverde, Martini Group and Unitec. The digital and infrastructure programme covered the University of Bologna’s Cesena campus, the DAMA Tecnopolo in Bologna and the Bologna San Donato railway test circuit.
Agribusiness Delegation: Post-Harvest, Livestock, and Fruit Processing
The agribusiness group included Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Hon. David Ernest Silinde, and the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Prof. Peter Lawrence Msoffe, alongside officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, public agencies, commodity boards, and private-sector organisations.
Apofruit–Almaverde: Post-Harvest Handling and Cold Storage
At Apofruit–Almaverde in Pievesestina, the visit covered the post-harvest chain, from fruit reception and quality control through pre-cooling, cold storage, ripening, sorting, grading, packaging and dispatch.
The programme focused on technologies used to manage produce after harvest, including cold storage and shelf-life management.
Martini Group: Livestock and Food Operations
At Martini Group in Longiano, the delegation visited operations spanning meat production, livestock farming and animal feed.
The company’s food and livestock divisions are supported by laboratories, research centres and production plants. The programme identified potential partnership opportunities related to livestock development in Tanzania.
Unitec: Fruit Sorting, Grading and Training
The visit to Unitec covered fruit-sorting and grading equipment, including machine-vision and AI systems applicable to crops such as avocados.
The programme also included training and skills development at the company’s campus near its headquarters.
Digital and Infrastructure Delegation: AI, Data Centres and Rail
The digital group included Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Hon. Dr. Pius Stephen Chaya, and officials from the Tanzania ICT Commission, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL), Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).
University of Bologna: Artificial Intelligence and Industry 4.0
At the University of Bologna’s Cesena campus, the programme covered the LabE – Excellence Laboratory 4.0 and work involving the university’s engineering and computer-science departments.
The technologies included AI, computer vision, intelligent robotics, quantum technologies, wireless systems, sensors and Industry 4.0 applications.
DAMA Tecnopolo: Supercomputing, Data Centres, and AI
In Bologna, the delegation visited DAMA–Data Manufacture Emilia-Romagna Tecnopolo, which brings together high-performance computing and data infrastructure.
The site includes Leonardo, the European supercomputer operated by CINECA; the data centre of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN-CNAF); the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ high-performance computing centre; and the IT4LIA AI Factory.
The programme also covered IT4LIA’s AI supercomputer, designed to provide computing resources and services to research institutions, companies, start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Bologna San Donato: Railway Testing and Simulation
The final visit was to the Bologna San Donato Dynamic Railway Test Circuit and the High-Speed Railway Technology Simulation Centre operated by the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group.
The facility tests rolling stock and railway systems, as well as onboard and trackside technologies. The programme also covered the use of IT and AI in railway safety, traffic management and signalling.
The EU–Tanzania Roadshow Continues in The Hague
The site visits formed part of the EU–Tanzania Investment and Business Forum 2026–2027 roadshow, organised by the European Union to present Tanzania’s investment opportunities to European companies.
