The President of the United Republic of Tanzania Honourable Jakaya Kikwete announced that the total population of Tanzania reached 44,929,002.
The announcement was made at the presentation of the 2012 Population and Housing Census.
The previous census conducted in 2002 showed a total population of 34,443,603, resulting in an increase of 10.5 million people in 10 years.
The President said that the total population in mainland Tanzania stands at 43,625,434 while that in Zanzibar stands at 1,303,560.
Kikwete also explained that at such grow rate the total population of Tanzania is expected to reach 51 Million by 2016.
He warned this will put additional stress on the country’s economic development and for it is imperative that families start acknowledging the importance of family planning, to avoid falling standards of living.
Later this year the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) will issue additional findings such as the total number of men and women as well as other analysis.
The next Population and Housing Census is scheduled for 2022.
