Tanzania’s National Identification Authority (NIDA) has recently introduced a requirement for all foreign nationals residing in Dar es Salaam for more than six months to obtain a residence ID card.
Tanzania Residence ID Card
The ID cards will be issued after processing the application and submission of required documentation at a NIDA office. Applicants are required to submit original copies of:
- A passport of their country of origin
- A work permit (valid for more than six months)
- A residence permit (valid for more than six months)
- A bank payslip (Payable at Cooperative Rural Development Bank Tanzania)
Registration timeline
The registration procedure has started for all foreign nationals residing in Dar es Salaam and these individuals were required to complete the registration and identification procedure before November 2nd, 2016.
It should be noted that NIDA expects to communicate an extension of that timescale shortly.
For regions outside of Dar es Salaam, the registration procedure and time schedule are expected to be announced in the near future.
This will be a transitionary process for any foreign national who was residing in Tanzania for more than six months before November 2nd, 2016 as additional cities and regions within the country are brought into the requirement.
However, for foreign nationals entering Tanzania after 2 November 2016, registration with NIDA and obtaining the residence ID card will form part of the individual’s immigration procedure irrespective of where they will reside in the country.
Individuals leaving Tanzania will be required to return the legal residence ID card to the immigration department prior to departure.
Application fees
An application fee of USD20–100, depending on the nature of the residence, will be payable by the applicant. The application fee is non-refundable and should be paid upfront into NIDA’s bank account.
