Tanzania adds nine new cultural tourism enterprises (CTEs) coordinated by its Cultural Tourism Program (CTP) to diversify and expand its cultural tourism offer.
CTEs operate as a total set of products that involve different cultural and natural attractions, activities and provision of services in a given local community and aim at providing employment and income generating opportunities to local communities in rural areas of Tanzania.
The new CTE’s have been announced for different regions namely Kiliman Cultural Tourism Enterprise, Rau Eco and Cultural Tourism Enterprise and Lyamungo for Kilimanjaro region, Meru Forest Eco-Tourism and Momela Cultural Tourism & Campsite for Arusha region and Liuli-Pomonda Cultural Tourism Enterprise for Ruvuma region.
Elirehema Maturo, CTP Coordinator explained that tourism reducing poverty by developing right strategies in cooperation with majors groups like central government, tourism operators and local communities is more effective than ecotourism and community based tourism.
A research report on “The Role of Tourism in Poverty Alleviation” in Tanzania by the University Of Dar Es Salaam indicates that in cultural tourism the incomes from this type of tourism goes direct to the performer (individual), hence being significant towards poverty alleviation.
Cultural Tourism in Tanzania has been developing since 1996, under the stewardship of the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) in collaboration with Ministry of Natural Resources & Tourism (MNRT) and The Netherlands Development Organization (SNV).
