The Tanzanian government announced that it will soon launch the Engaruka soda ash project, a transformative initiative aimed at tapping into the region’s rich natural resources.
The Minister of Industries and Trade, Dr Suleiman Jafo, made the announcement during a recent site visit in the Monduli District of the Arusha region, stressing that the project is expected to significantly enhance local production capabilities and reduce the country’s reliance on imported soda ash.
The Engaruka Basin is estimated to contain approximately 4.68 billion cubic meters of brine suitable for soda ash production.
The government plans to establish a soda ash extraction plant with an ambitious production capacity of at least 1,000,000 metric tonnes per annum.
This facility will utilize underground brine reserves to pump sodium carbonate solution, which is essential for various industries, including glass manufacturing, detergents, and water treatment.
This strategic initiative is anticipated to create thousands of job opportunities for local residents, stimulating economic growth in the region.
The project will also include training programs aimed at equipping the local workforce with the necessary skills to thrive in the emerging industry.
The Minister emphasized the importance of involving local communities in the project, ensuring that they benefit from the economic opportunities it presents.
To facilitate the project, the Tanzanian government has committed to providing robust support through favorable policies and infrastructure development.
About the Engaruka Basin Soda Ash Project
The Engaruka Basin Soda Ash Project, located in the Monduli District of the Arusha Region, approximately 160 km northeast of Arusha Town, is set to establish a soda ash extraction plant with a capacity of at least 1,000,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA).
This project will involve the extraction of sodium carbonate solution (brine) from underground aquifers to produce soda ash, a crucial raw material used in various industries, including glass manufacturing, fertilizers, dyes, petroleum refining, and water treatment.
Exploratory drilling in the Engaruka area has revealed the presence of approximately 4.68 billion cubic meters of brine, alongside a solid salt crust estimated at 9.36 billion cubic meters. Testing has confirmed that the brine is suitable for soda ash production.
The Monduli District Council has allocated 27,000 hectares of land for the project, and fieldwork for surveying and valuing properties of affected residents has been completed, with compensation processes underway.
The National Development Corporation (NDC) is spearheading this initiative, which promises to provide significant economic benefits to the region, including job creation and local industry support.
The government has mobilized over TZS 14 billion to compensate residents who will be relocated for the project, ensuring that all eligible individuals receive appropriate payments.
