Rail Assets Holding Company (RAHCO), the state-owned company responsible for developing, managing and maintaining Tanzania rail infrastructure, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South African Kifaru Rail Limited (KRL) for the provision of railway services in the country.

KRL will soon be operating on the Central Rail Line between Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, Mwanza and Tanga in Tanzania.

The company indicated that it offers a competitive solution when moving freight from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda to the Port of Dar es Salaam.

There is currently only one company operating railway services on RAHCO railway network, the state-owned Tanzania Railways Limited (TRL), with whom RAHCO entered in a Concession Agreement in September 2007.

Engineer Benhadard Tito Managing Director of RAHCO said that to make sure that there is an efficient and reliable railway transport from end to end, as many operators as possible are needed.

Engineer Tito indicated that KRL is expected to commence operations in Tanzania before the end of 2015.

There is still plenty of room for investment in Tanzania’s railway sector, Engineer Tito indicated in an exclusive interview with TanzaniaInvest.com:

In the same interview Tito reminded that “Railway transport is more economical than road on distances above 500km. Tanzania is neighbor to the noncoastal countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Malawi. These countries are more closer to the Tanzania Ports than are to the competing ports.”
