Dar Es Salaam AMI Hospital, part of African Medical Investments plc, launched a Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Month campaign.
The campaign includes free consultation and 20% discount on laboratory tests and diagnostic. Additionally for every mammography patients receive free breast ultrasound check.
According to Lawrence Achola, Managing Director of AMI Hospital “The global trends do indicate that the non communicable diseases are on the rise. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today into this world will get breast cancer at some point. In Tanzania, Cervical and Breast Cancer are the leading malignancies. The good news is that many women can survive these cancers if it’s found and treated early. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help detect breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. A pap smear will screen for Cervical Cancer. Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. AMI’s Pink October therefore is a proactive initiative to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, cervical cancer and other non-communicable diseases.”
According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) breast cancer is among the most common causes of cancer mortality among the 7.6 million cancer deaths occurring annually in developing countries like Tanzania.
