According to Eng. Felchesmi Mbramba, acting Director of Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), power shortages and other challenges in electricity supply in Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam are coming to an end.
The announcement was made at the opening ceremony of one of the five new power substations that will generate power in Dar es Salaam.
During the event Eng. Mbramba added that TANESCO is currently focused on solving the problem of power cuts in Tanzania once and for all.
Despite the promise of big offshore gas finds, Tanzania remains critically short of power.
However it is expected that Tanzania will eventually be a regional hub for power thanks to its natural gas reserves.
Prof Sospeter Muhongo, Minister of Energy and Minerals, recently announced that Tanzania will reach a power surplus of 1,500 MW by 2015.
Accordingly Tanzania is expected to start exporting electricity by the end of 2014.
