Dar Es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit Project To receive More Than 70 Modern Buses

Usafiri Dar es Salaam (Uda), a Tanzanian passenger bus operators and Dar es Salaam Commuter Bus Owners Association (Darcoboa) have established a new company called UDA Rapid Transit Company that will run Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART).

The company will buy and run 76 modern buses in Tanzania’s commercial capital under the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project for 2 years.

DART Agency Chief Executive, Ms. Asteria Mlambo, Mr. Robert Kisena and Mr. Sabri Mabruki from Uda Rapid Transit, Mr Mabruki Chairperson Dar es Salaam Commuter Bus Owners Association (DARCOBOA), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government, Ms. Hawa Ghasia, and Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr Saidi Meck Sadiki attended the agreement signing ceremony.

The company is expected to be listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) to give a chance for Tanzanians to buy shares and hence become part-owners”, said Mr. Mabruki at the ceremony.

 

The construction of Dar Es Salaam bus rapid transit system began in April 2012 and the project is scheduled to start by September 15, 2015. The training of the drivers will start in July with two sample buses.

Construction of a 20.9-kilometre special trunk road from Kimara terminal to Kivukoni area; Msimbazi road from Fire to Kariakoo-Gerezani area, and a part of Kawawa Road from Magomeni to Morocco junction will done as part of the project.
