The Tanzania Coffee Board (TCB) has announced that annual coffee production in the next season is expected to reach 61,000 tons, an increase of 52% compared to the 40,000 tons of the last season of 2014.
Mr Adolph Kumburu, Director General of TCB explained that the current expected production is below the 80,000 tons of coffee spelled in the Tanzanian Coffee Industry Development Strategy, due to bad weather, smuggling and issues related to pesticides.
Coffee is one of Tanzania’s primary agricultural export commodities accounting for about 5% of total exports value, and generating export earnings averaging USD 100 million per annum over the last 30 years.
The Coffee Industry Development Strategy aims to increase Tanzania coffee production from the present average of 50,000 tons to at least 80,000 tons by 2016 and reach 100,000 tons by 2021.
Increased production will be reached through improvement of productivity, suppressing unnecessary intermediaries and diminishing transaction costs.
In this way by 2021 farmers should receive at least 75% of coffee free on board (FOB) price.
