The first trading week of 2025 at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) spanned four days, marking a recovery in market activity following the holiday-shortened week prior.

Turnover and Volume

The trading week ending Friday, 3rd January 2025, at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) was a full four-day trading week. The DSE recorded a total turnover of TZS 3,552.61 million from 3,006,329 shares traded.

This represents a -64.61% decrease in turnover and a +2.08% increase in trading volume compared to Week 52, which had a turnover of TZS 10,038.49 million and 2,945,097 shares traded during a three-day trading week.

The highest daily turnover was recorded on Thursday, 2nd January 2025, with TZS 2,367.15 million, largely driven by block trades on the DSE counter.

Market Capitalization

At the end of Week 1, the total market capitalization stood at TZS 17,951.19 billion, reflecting a +2.09% increase compared to the previous week’s TZS 17,582.13 billion.

Domestic market capitalization was TZS 12,244.72 billion, marking a +1.11% increase from TZS 12,109.98 billion in Week 52 of 2024.

Bond Market

The bond market recorded a total turnover of TZS 34.04 billion in Week 1, 2025, representing a +0.53% increase compared to TZS 33.86 billion in Week 52, 2024.

The number of deals increased significantly, reaching 97 deals, up +22.78% from 79 deals in the previous week.

Activity was dominated by trades in 20-year and 25-year government bonds, with notable contributions from high-value transactions.

Indexes

The week saw a broad-based recovery across all indexes except for the Commercial Services Index (CS), which remained unchanged.

The All Share Index (DSEI) posted the strongest gain of +2.04%, driven by improved performance in cross-listed stocks.

The Tanzania Share Index (TSI) also rose by +1.04%, reflecting overall strength in domestic equities, with notable contributions from the Industrial & Allied Index (IA), which gained +1.79%.

The Banks, Finance & Investment Index (BI) edged up by +0.54%, supported by steady gains in banking stocks.
