Tanzania Mining Sector Plans To Diversify With Construction Of Coal And Iron Mine

According to a new report released by the Business Monitor International (BMI) Tanzania is planning to expand its mining sector through the further development of its significant nickel, coal and uranium deposits.

The country’s mining sector currently contributes nearly 3.7% of the total GDP, with the majority of the contribution coming directly from the country’s historically high gold production.

According to the report entitled “New Market Research Report Tanzania Mining Report Q1 2015,”the long term plan for the country’s mining sector is to diversify into various sub-sectors including expect coal, nickel and uranium production by 2018.

“The announcement in September 2014 that construction of a coal and iron ore mine plus a 600MW coal-fired power plant will begin next year in Tanzania provides a much-needed boost to the outlook for the mining sector,” reads the report.
