New Railway to Link Tanzania with Rwanda and Burundi

Tanzania hosted a meeting with the Ministers for Transport of neighbouring countries Burundi and Rwanda to finalise the feasibility study for the development of a new railway to link the three countries.

The line connecting Dar es Salaam to Kigali in Rwanda and to Musongati in Burundi is aimed at easing transport and export of goods from these mineral rich countries to the sea, at Tanzanians ports.

To date Burundi and landlocked Rwanda rely on expensive and slow road transportation for exporting goods.

Rail transportation to the Indian Ocean via Tanzania will greatly reduce both cost of transport currently heavily impacted by rising fuel price as well as time currently up to a month for cargos to reach the ports.

The financing of the project valued at USD 5.2 billion will be provided in great part by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United State Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

Dr Alexis Nzahabwanimana Minister for Transport of Rwanda indicated that Public-Private Partnership initiatives are part of the project.

Construction of the new railway is expected to start as soon as March 2013 and should take three years to be completed.

DRC to Build Dry Port in Dar es Salaam, Deepen Transport and Mining Ties with Tanzania

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has begun preparations to build a dry port in Dar es Salaam that will provide customs, cargo handling, mineral certification, and quality control services for Congolese goods moving through Tanzania, President Félix Tshisekedi announced during a state visit to Tanzania on 18 August 2026. The DRC is among the largest users of Tanzanian ports, with approximately 7.2 million tonnes of cargo handled in 2023, as the two countries agreed to accelerate transport, trade, and mining cooperation along the Central Corridor.

Tanzania Begins Construction of USD 2.74 Billion Tabora-Kigoma SGR Railway Section

President Samia Suluhu Hassan laid the foundation stone for the 506-kilometer Tabora-Kigoma Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) section on 20 July 2026, a USD 2.74 billion (TZS 7.4 trillion) investment linking Dar es Salaam Port to Lake Tanganyika. The section forms the second phase of Tanzania's SGR program, alongside the planned Uvinza-Musongati line, and is expected to position Kigoma as a regional trade hub connecting Tanzania to Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.
